Thinking out loud? Engine problems

Thinking out loud on repair,
Well it seems that the good deal I got on the Sarita is going to be more in line by the time I get finished with all the repairs? Problem w/ starboard engine not coming above 3000rpm led to seeing that the risers (both sides) could use a change, so I thought not too expensive preventative for once go ahead rob just do it, done.So... we decide to make a close run just to check everything out and maybe get some state snaps, NOT. Did not make it out of the jetties. Was running great WOT 4200 for a second or two, cruse 3000PS/3300SS to sync? at around 20kts. I am feeling good at last..........
Start to have some power loss on the S side?? The temps are great, 140 or lower. I back her down and go down to check it out, open the lid and she dies. I check the oil, clean I can see the prop is turning so no rope or stuff, trans fluid good. We changed the fuel filter and it was bad, but that would not lock up the motor???? Limped back to the slip, still hard to back down even w/ Capt. Pats rudders, I'm not that good yet. Mechanic came out pulled the head gaskets and plugs, WATER! Looked at oil level, AGAIN, high, must have died before it emulsified? SO.... I am having the heads pulled to check the inside, will probably rebuild?? I wish the bank account could handle the diesel refit, but I think the wife might not go for that. She did say "why don't you do both while it's out of the water" I think I will keep her.
The engines have around 550 hrs does that sound out of the norm? I know she is worth it but she is testing my patients.
Any advise of what to look for, prob a blown head gasket????
