Yes the reason why they recomended it was only for some degree of protection for cold starts.I was originally using Mobile 1 by a very small amount but I switched to the highest grade that meets diesel requirements, Shell Synthetic 5W-40 but only a quart and a half per 24 quart mix per engine. Piece of mind I guess but I do believe it gives some degree of protection for cold starts. I really got sold on the synthetics and that Dura Lube stuff when I had an incident with my old Bertram 25 and the Mercruisers under warranty. I had used the Dura Lube product on each engine. I also used 1 quart synthetic and 5 quarts standard 40 W Rotella or I think it was Pennzoil in those years. When my dealer discovered the two inner cylinders of one engine did not meet specs he contacted Mercruiser since I bought the 5 year warranty. He did me a favor ,Mercruiser said normal wear (only 730 hours and 4 years old). Well to make a long story short I drove that boat 12 miles down river without no oil in it before it seazed. He blamed the problem on a faulty valve cover gasket! Mercruiser gave me a new engine then! So from personel experience and talking to others with similar experiences with that product and synthetics I am a believer. It sticks to the cylinder walls longer providing better protection for friction. So being a boat and not run everyday like a car I wanted some added protection and perhaps the placibo effect but at least I sleep better and so far so good 10 years now...Happy motoring! What happened to the Bardhal Hats? Ha. Ha. miss those old 301 ,283, 265 block days. Before your time Bruce but I was a Hot Rod nut somewhat in my young years untill I discovered women. Thanks for your help again.
