Maybe this helps:
The general idea is to spread the load (tabbing) over an area capable of handling flex, all be it twisting or bending. In the case of bulk heads running athwartship don't wedge a piece of wood in place and then tab it in; as the boat flexes that hard edge will try and move beyond its encasement, eventually you see it in the form of a bump or crack (especially if you have done this work while racked out of the water. Capt. Pats drawings are the right way to avoid these issues.
Pillasters and window trims, non structrual type add ons, If they aren't wedged in its safe to say you can build to fit, (then give your self enough bonding material and fiberglass to carry the load) It's width not length dear.Hope it helps
