Don't be too hasty to dump the magazine. First I would call them to ask if it is regular policy to call regarding subscription renewals. If they say yes I would explain to them what happened, actually I would tell them even if they said no, but check first and ask. The guy that called may have been a scam artist trying to find a way to steal your identity by getting your credit card information. In the recent past, I have gotten unsolicited calls from Capital Finance (supposedly) telling me I was preapproved for a card as long as I had a valid checking account. They had all my other information....name, address, phone number, and who knows what else?, but they didn't have my checking account number. They even asked me to GIVE THEM my account information over the phone, at which point I told the lady that I don't give my account info to unsolicited callers. She was very polite with me and said she understood completely and hung up immediately afterwards.
