Did they give you a specific reason for doing so?
While it won't hurt, its not really enough to give you the true properties of a synthetic oil.
Non solid synthetic oils have properties that will make them withstand higher engine temps without breaking down as fast as dead dyno oil.
They also seem to reduce friction which in turn saves fuel, lowers wear and produces less heat. They will still break down though and the most important feature in oil, the additives, will go away which is why synthetic oil cannot be left in 2 or 3 times longer than dead dyno oil.
At 20k miles in the truck I switched to Royal Purple. It is still changed every 3k miles but I have a fuel computer and do get about 60 miles more out of a tank of fuel after switching to RP.
Not all synthetics are created equal though.
I have heard of alot of failures with those using Mobile 1.
