Bob,
Sounds like a nice place to live and hunt.Getting to old for it now, but I never liked tree stand hunting, too cold. Always prefered stalking.
A simple compass and topography map of the area along with sun rise/set, a stream or any other baseline pretty much makes it easy to find your way out of most places your not familiar with. The most important thing I took was the fire kit.
Magnesium bar and flint, cotton balls with wax and ooo steel wool along with a small container of extra powder. Fire was always important. I figured if I had that, I could survive a long time.
I was lucky to have a fanatic about survival during my boy scout years as the local troop leader.Ahh, the good old and younger days.
Nice thing about getting old, you got the memories without the cold weather or heavy pack.
