dripless shaft seals?

About midway through the season this year my shaft drip graduated to a slow stream. Gave the adjustment nuts a slight turn to slow it back down to drip, however I am wondering how much longer I can do that before I need to replace the packing. I have all of the boat's maintenance records from the prior owner ('88-'03) and do not see that the packing was ever replaced.
I know that some owners (Doug C. being one of them) have dripless seals. What has eveyone's experience been with them and what kind of ongoing maintenance do they require? My father purchased a boat during the season and it has a dripless style seal. During the survey I asked the surveyor about it and he said that you basically do nothing to it. I find that hard to believe given that nothing on a boat is totally maintenance free!
I figured that it might be worth looking into during the off season. As Doug C. says about a standard shaft seal, "Something about having a controlled leak in your boat is unsettling."
Any input is greatly appreciated.

Just finished winterizing my engines this evening...I may have to move to a warmer climate with a longer boating season.
