Whoa guys. Let's figure out why it's shredding belts. I have the 6BTA 250's and changed the belts the first time after 2,000 hours. The Cummins flat serpintine belt just does not eat up by itself. Somthing is wrong. Let's go thru the belt system and see if we can ID a problem.
(1) do you have the belt guard on? If so, the mounting flat irons will cut the edge of the belt if the guard gets cocked. Consider, as I did, taking it off. (2) do you have the belt wrapped correctly around the pulleys? There is an "old style" wrap and a "new style" wrap. The same belt will fit both wraps, but doing the wrong one will eat the belt. Strange as it seems, but true.
Your manual should have the correct wrap, but make sure you have the correct manual for the engines, not one from another model Cummins - go with the CPL, not the year or the h.p.
(3) Make sure the idler pulley bearing is not loose or wobbly - that is the spring loaded pulley that you put the half inch socket handle in to change the belt. And last, just carefully check the belt while running to make sure something is not rubbing the edge, and I guess also make sure - the obvious - it is the correct belt and not an automotive GM one that may be too wide.
Let us know - your problem is almost unheard of on a Cummins 6B.
