Steve,
I was advised by my Diesel mechanic that using Marvel Mystery oil (in correct proportions)will help tremendously in keeping the injector pump clean and also the injectors. I use it religiously along with cleaning the Racors with a filter change every 6 months and have had no problems now since I've been doing that. Trick on cleaning the Racor bowl. I simply pour mineral spirits in there a couple times . It disolves all that crud. Then use carburetor cleaner to wash off excess mineral spirits. Then put your new filter in with fresh diesel fuel. Primer pump a few times and your good to go. I had the same problem with a small shine upon startup from my port engine. It was diagnosed as a leaky injector. He said use the Marvel mystery oil. I have and had no problems since. I also take care of the fuel here as our Florida climate is condusive to algae build up. I use the Fuel Tek additive as described earlier on this site. A lot of guys like the Alage X and swear by it. Man you want to take care of that fuel otherwise pay the price.
