I used the bigger hammer method a few years ago and found I had damaged a gear in the tranny. Guess I used too big a hammer. Now I remove the shafts with the props attached, crank down on the prop with the gear puller and whack the screw on the gear puller or turn the assy upside down and drop it on the gearpuller screw.
