I personally prefer not to live bait fish although I acknowledge that often it is the most successful way to catch big fish and customers often request that you to do it. Within the last few years, more undersized Porgies, Sea Bass and other species have been caught and used as live bait by sportsfisherman chasing Striped Bass than any of us wants to acknowledge. One of these days someone's going to get boarded out my way and they'd better have instant eject live bait wells. As I understand it, there are even discussions on possible eel regulations. It's very hard to troll lures when the usual Bass areas are covered with boats drifting live baits. Word of some boardings and fines might change that but it's become more of a common practice recently. Better we police ourselves than have the DEC do it with the arrests and fines that their way comes with. Walter
