Please stay away from the Home Depot, Lowes home standby units. They are cheap in cost, and they are garbage.
Every single person that I know of that bought one, had it fail very quickly.
Theres a reason good stuff costs money.
If you want a no muss and fuss system, UV's set is the way to go.
Auto transfer units have burned down quit a few structures.
IE, if a storm hits and the power goes out and a tree crushes your roof, the gen set switches on and power ups the broken wires in the attic.
If you ain't home when this happens, your sol.If you have the mechanical ability of Mike, then you can do what he did to save money. Remember an older or used set will need tinkering. Keep in mind if your gonna have to pay someone to do this.
Also remember marine sets had water cooled exhaust, some gen sets have cast aluminum manifolds that won't take the heat of no water running thru them and will have to be changed. Also if you decide to run off home heating oil, check with your supplier to see the blend you are getting to make sure it is compatable with running an engine. As my article stated a few months back, some blends are not.
Also if you are prone to getting permits or have neighbors that will make sure you get permits, check the codes to see what is allowed.
