Ken,
I wouldn't use an anti/syphon valve on the ac pump to prevent air lock. The basic function of the valve is to prevent backflow of water by breaking the suction with air.
In the case of the gen set, the exhaust was at the water line. When sailing and heeled over, the exhaust was under water and with the water running by, it created a suction on the exhaust outlet.
Since the intake cooling water is injected into the exhaust, the suction pulled water from the intake into the exhaust. Without the gen running, it filled the exhaust and back filled into the gen set hydro locking it.
This was all helped by the fact the genset and such was all well below the water line.If the valve had been working the suction would have been broken and no water would have flowed.
Non self priming pumps like ac pumps need to be below the water line. Just at can lead to air locks.
If you pull off the outlet hose, water should flow without the pump running.
As been mentioned, a simple bleed off valve can be used if remounting the pump is not practical. If it is a rare occasion, then just yank the outlet hose off and bleed that way.
