I have to agree with Vic and Steve,
I've been around generators for a long time. The diesel models just seem to run and run. The last big storm we had presented some issues.
I got three phone calls from friends. In each case:
Gen 1 - bad gas in the carb, I had to rebuild it.
Gen 2 - Clogged jet, again... bad gas.
Gen 3 - LP Model - 12 volt Charging system gone, had to put a charger on a spare battery and swith out every 20 hours or so.
Gen 4 - My own generator - I had to go out and get gas it up every six hours because of the small tank. Not hardly worth it.Now, the LP model I speak of is a very old Wisconson two cyl. and has NEVER had the points or plug changed. The thing just sits in this persons basement and they cut it on when needed. I bet I was the first person to change the oil in it after about 10 years of emergancy use. Except for the charging system going (keeps coil hot) it never fails to start. All of the issues I spoke of could have been avoided with regular use, but who really checks their generator even once a month?
Choice 1 for me is 1800 RPM diesel, two being LP and last would be gas. I also agree about the Manual transfer switch over automatic. My uncle has a PTO driven unit that he has for his diesel tractor. As much as I did not like it at first, it has proven to be reliable so far as well.
