I've had a Generac (from Home Depot) 15KW standby unit, LP underground tank. We have LP for the stove, water heater, etc. so we figured it would be a good choice. Only $2500 four years ago. It did us fine till the 2nd week without power during Wilma (we are in Delray Beach, FL). It took a dive and to repair it was $1800.00, that didn't happen. I'm going to look into other options for next year.
In regards to the Diesel option previously mentioned. There are some other intriguing reasons for diesel...if you live in FL and are on the water especially. Normally FL will not let you install a Diesel tank in your back yard to pump fuel into your boat. They will let you install a diesel tank in your backyard if you have a diesel generator. Get the picture? My neighbor has a nice Blackfin 32, he also has his own biz where he buys and stores diesel for his trucks without the road tax. I'm jealous he's going to put all this in and have cheap fuel dockside. Great idea.
