Walter - first you have to decide what KW you need. I am against the auto transfer switches because they are expensive and I don't like the idea of the genset running when I don't know about it, just a safety concern.
There are many air cooled diesel sets mostly under 10 kw. Lister is one of the old line manufacturers, but a lot of others are out there too. Drawback is most air cooled diesels are 3600 rpm and make a lot of noise.
Most big houses need a 200 amp transfer switch for single phase service.
I have a 21 KW Next Gen driven by an 1800 rpm 4 cyl. Kubota engine and with two mufflers and an outdoor enclosure, it is very quiet and STRONG - will run my whole house like the pole power is on. I have a 275 gallon farm tank for it, which is overkill, but nice to know I can run near a month with no refueling. Diesel fuel stabilizer and a good Racor make the fuel last about forever. I have an Algae X unit for it that I've never installed, but will some day.
I don't like the propane units since you have to deal with ignition systems, carbs, etc vs. the diesel that's simple.
Next Gen sells a radiator cooled 21 KW for about 6500 and add about a grand for an outdoor enclosure. If you have home heating oil already you are set for a diesel, just nned a good lift pump and a Racor.
Diesel is the way to go.
