Hi Peter,
The numbering formula described by Lee Dana is as you posted. I will forward to you the note in Lee's own words. An article in the Florida Journal of Commerce dated May, 1962, describes the 100th Bertram 31 being sold through the Thomas Nelson Yacht Agency to Crown Prince Bertil of Sweden. The article referred to the celebration of Bertram's 100th B-31 being completed in March of that year. Seems reasonable that your boat could've been the 85th boat, with the hull being pulled from the mold in December of '61. The first fiberglas 31 was finished in December, 1960 (presumably hull # 101), and was put into the race circuit as "Glass Moppie". In January, 1961, the first Bertram 31 built for the consumer (hull #102) appeared at the NY Boat Show. But I agree with you Peter, 85+ boats in the first year of production sounds like a lot.
