Vic, I learned about that unit when somebody posted on Boatdiesel about a year ago. Was worth the $40 to know I was really turning 3,000 on my 6B CPL 970s - as you know, a good preventative config on that CPL.

One catch, though.... you will need to do something on your pulley to prevent random reflections from messing up the counter. I started my motor, and gave the outside rim of the front pulley a shot of black spray paint, after it dries, you can apply a piece of reflective tape (comes with the photo tach), and it works great. Can shoot from about 2' away even, so you don't have to get close to the belts.
