There are more extreme lighting sources halogen: Xenon, gas discharge, etc. which are much more efficient/brighter ... but get expensive. Xenon lights are ~2X brighter than halogen for the same power consumption, some of the gas discharge technology is on the order of 10x brighter at 100x cost.

The 110 AC 500W housings with tungsten-halogen lamps are probably the best bang for the buck. If you want a higher end housing, the hella powder coated housings can be had for ~$100 and the Stainless for ~$300.
