Like I've told many of you guys, if it wern't for crooks I'd be riding on the back of a garbage truck before daylight.

One of the better dumb crook stories that illistrate the depth of corruption in this swampy state is a call I got years ago from a woman who wanted me to represent her sister and the sister's husband, both had just been indicted by a federal grand jury for mail and wire fraud.

I don't get involved in criminal stuff much (except for friends) so I asked, just for sport, what the crime was all about. "Well", she said, "they were franchising a payroll padding deal". Yep, FRANCHISING IT. So I had to ask a few more questions about that. "See" she says, "they had a little company that provided laborers for the chemical plants, and billed for guys that did not exist, much less work". Soooooo, they were making so much money they decided to franchise the fraud scheme for a cut of the action to other crooks. Seems one of the franchisees got greedy and put like 250 laborers on a 3 guy job. When that one was caught (Gee, they got caught?) the franchisee dimed the franchasor out. The damn woman actually wanted to hire me, on behalf of the sister, not to defend the criminal charges, but to sue the bonehead that dimed them out for breach of contract - the franchise deal they had cut was no franchisee could dime out the franchasor.

The pure absurdity of the whole thing got me laughing, even for a moment thought it was a prank call, but it was not. She cussed me and hung up. Saw in the paper later they all went down for the count.

The point is, if there is one other than laughs (which we all need more of nowdays) is that easy money always gets you jail time. Katrina has exposed the soft underbelly of the pervasive corruption in New Orleans that hopefully will teach the rest of the country not to appropriate any money to rebuild a totally failed city. Sure, money to save lives, house the homeless for a while, but not a cent to rebuild what was already nothing but a cesspool of failed social, political, and overblown economic pie in the sky dreams with a rake off a every turn.

Let the chips fall where they may.
