Q: Draining Racors???

Today I replaced the elements in my Racors (2010-30M). I also put a wrench on the drain plug and gave it a turn, just to verify that it would. I wussed out on going any further w/o specific instructions. So here are my questions:

1. My Racors are dirty and neglected, I will give them a good going over in a couple months but for now can I just turn the drain plug and expect to drain off any water that may have accumulated in the bowl?

2. Should I do this while the engine is running, or does it matter?

3. I gave the plug about 1/2 a turn and the metal bowl became loose quickly. Does it come off during a typical "draining"? Whats it for? The one book I have says it just protects the glass bowl.

4. If I loosen the drain plug how is the bowl drained? (see my green arrows on the sketch) I assume flow will come out the bottom center of the plug but how does the fuel/water enter the plug, from the sides (logical) or through the top?

5. How do you deal w/ the effluent? Just stick a 5 gal bucket underneath and let 'er rip? I'm thinking you would want to just get dribs and drabs to check for water/particles but not drain off a bunch of clean fuel.

Thanks!
