fiberglass cowel/flush windows

Has anyone done the flush style windows (mount from inside to built up outboard edge) with the front cowel that Richard Kidd sells. My cowel shows up today and I'd like to know if I'm on the right page by building up the trailing edge of the old aluminum frame with a core(strip mahogany) and some matting, thus giving the quarter round something to stick and screw to.
I'd love to hear your thoughts.
