David,
Gerry's console is a total custom design and will be carried all the way through final varnish prior to installation. If I were doing one that was only "roughed out", sealed and stabilized, and sent to someone else for final fitting and finish, the cost would probably be under $2,000.00.
Since Gerry's console is an A to Z, Nuts to Soup project it'll be around $3,500.00.
Actual labor time is, of course, only a fraction of the elapsed time. Trips to Miami, epoxy to cure, varnish to cure, weather, all have "dead time" involved. I don't charge for time that isn't actually spent working.
I estimate a total labor time of about 65 - 70 hours. The 25" x 4/4" teak plank cost me over $600.00. I used about 60% of the board, but suppliers require you to by the whole board, no cutting to length or return of unused material.
The same was true on Jim Bailey's teak & holly sole. Lotta' scrap left over, and seldom enough for another significant project...
The first coat of Epifanes WoodFinish varnish went on this morning. With the shift over to that material, I can only shoot a single coat a day. It'll take about 6 days to shoot 500 ml. Then several days to final cure and sand for the finish coats. That final sanding will dictate if I have to apply more than two finish coats...
Br,
Patrick
