Mike,

You probably have either the Safe-t or the Big-T (Rotory style) helm. The Big-T has a straight shaft that extends out from the helm opposite the control cable going to the tie bar & rudders. The Safe-T model has the cable wraping back around through the helm and the cable end comes out on the same side and paralell to the cable going back to the rudders.

Back off the threaded main cable collar from the helm and unwind the cable completely out of the helm. With the cable free, pull it out from under the dash and work 30 weight oil into the cable housing. It may take some time to get about 6 oz down it, but it'll run down hill all the way to the other end. (Put a big rag down there in case it wants to drip through.)

Rewind the cable into the helm, secure the locking collar, and exercise the wheel through several rotations both ways. This should make sure that your problem isn't in the cable.

If it's still hard to work or tries to lock up, either the cable or the helm itself is bad. Hopefully the above remedy will get you through the season. Plan on shifting over to hydraulic this winter for sure... Mechanical steering is stone age on Bertrams bigger than the B25.

Br,

Patrick
