Crae-
Ran all over on Saturday in the Anna E. with my kid casting and trolling. Great time, and made my contribution to the energy shortage. I had plenty of time to do the math with regard to gas/diesel. With amount of hours we run (10 minutes until we have lines in), and Bay range needed, tough to justify diesels except for resale. Another thing that I think is real important for us is the ability to troll at 2 or 2.5 knots--you can do that with a gas boat, tougher with a diesel...and at that speed, diesel fumes better not bother you.
Now if you're going to put Mako out at OC/Indian River/Wach/VA Beach--whatever, you need diesels for range and the savings on fuel burn. I may fish on Wed. on my friend's gasser, and we generally go through 200 gallons a trip.
Ran all over the Bay on Sunday with my kid--including breakfast at Harrison's on Tilghman (nice spot if you get down that way)--burned about 10 gallons. We were in the whaler. I saw Patnovic's red boat down by BPL from a distance--the one on the cover of Ches. Bay mag years ago and Prop Talk a month ago. Pretty boat...and I believe it has 6btas.
Me, I'm going to keep babying my '78 454s--love those motors--and hope for the best. Another consideration for us, is that we're Bay guys. My friend was over the other day, and he looked at the Anna E., and commented that she's all ready for OC. She may be, but although I've only had her break once (starboard raw water pump in a 5' following sea by Sharps Island Light--both kids puked on me 2 or 3 times while we walked/waddled home at 8 knots on one motor), I'd be nervous at best about going far off.
If they break, and I have lots of money ($65K?), its 6 cyl. Cummins or Yannies, less money ($50K?), its 4 cyl Yannies, less than that ($30K?), its 496 Crusaders, and less than that, fix what I got however I could until I could do.
Its your money. Your kids are young, you've got plenty of time to save for college (so do you John D--and I thought I heard "Jabba Jaws" on the radio Saturday--can't be 2 boats with that name). Looking forward to see what you do--hope it winds up being a cheap gas fix and you're back in soon. If not, fish with me this fall.
