454 vs. diesel ques.

I hate re-open the debate again, however, I removed one of my 454's last week and will soon have an $$ estimate on what it will cost (rebuild vs. long block).

Although the $$ are not burning a hole in my pocket by any means, I feel the need to at least explore the option of dropping in rebuilt diesels. I got to thinking about it again (as John F. says, "it's nice to think about it every now and then") after I spoke to a charter captain from Hatteras this week that I have known for years. He has been dropping rebuilt Cummins in several of his boats rather than going new. Most of the engines have come from a dealer/rebuilder in Chrisfield, MD.

Up until a few weeks ago when I had two working engines, I had been running 454's with 17x19 three blades giving me a 21/22 kt crusie. My question is, what horsepower diesel could be installed without having to change out shafts, struts, etc.? Finally, would that hp motor be an improvement in performance (i.e. cruising speed)? Without question it would be safer and more efficient than the 454 gas set up!

Thanks for any input.
Mack.
