Kevin,
Pulpits are not a cheap investment, and they can get in the way. Last year somone lost control of his boat and ended up ramming my pulpit while I was in my slip. The insurance check was for $6125, and that was after they deducted $500 for pre-existing condition.
You also need to decide whether you want fiberglass or teak. Butler makes both and will even match the color of your hull on the fiberglass pulpit.
As for looks and function, they are great for using with or storing your anchor. I plan to add a winch in the near future to make anchoring and retrieval a one man job. No more bow climbing in rough waters. I also placed my spot/search light on the forepeak of my pulpir and have seen other boats with this setup. As for looks, it's all personal. I happen to think that done right it adds to the look of my 31. Also consider extending your bowrail to match with the pulpit.
I sent you some pictures of Windstar via email for you to check to see if you like the look.Harv
