a couple of reasons----those racing boats were turning small diameter wheels----in the diesel boats the large blade area is causing the stern to lift and bow to dig in.

some --but not all were v-drive boats with the motors siiting in the stern---the boats were a lot lighter with less superstructure and if you see pictures of Dick's Bertram ---Lucky Moppie--his drivers seat was mounted on the transom--taking it to extreme.

i have a very light gas boat with a flybridge---i often exceed 40 mph on the bay and have expierenced no handling problems be it chine walk or bow digging in --and have not modified my shaft angle.
