Top speed of a 31

Patrick, you mentioned in the Diesel vs Gas thread that in order to increase top speed in the 31, you had to change shaft angles. What did they do in the racing versions of the 31 that dominated offshore racing through the early to mid '60s? I know that they had monster HP, but how did they drive them?
