Ok, I blew a gas engine so I had no choice. Or you could argue I could have enjoyed a 31' floating deck.
When I looked at the price comparison between the gas replacements, and the 240 Yanmars, it really was not that big. I did replace props, and shafts, but with the same size shafts. I would have done that anyway. Same exhausts, blah blah blah. Yes, I modified the engine beds. Would have had to do that anyway. New wiring harnesses. Would have had to do that anyway.
All told, essentially most of it would have had to have been done anyway.
Am I happy with my diesels? Yes. Would I have liked new gas? Yes. Why do I prefer the diesels then? Well, Hmm. First, the yanmars do not smell. They do not smoke. They do not vibrate. They are very, very quiet.
In addition I burn 11 gph or less. I cruise at an honest 24 knots. All day long, all the time. I go offshore to the edge, overnight, and with a round trip of well over 250 miles and burn 150 or so gallons. And it costs a hell of a lot less.
That is my take, and I had no choice going in.
But I like my new engines. And there is so much more room with these yanmars, compared to the old Chryslers that I couldn't find anyone to work on, wow.
It is all good. That is all I can say. That and stay away from my former boatyard on the Mystic River, in Mystic, CT, on the left as you drive up the river, after Nymans fuel and bait. That would help anyone...
