Diesel vs. Gas always a long post:
1)Diesel is safer. Will not blow up like gas. It has to be heated to burn.
2)Fumes are not toxic like gas.
3)Fuel is denser therefore much more ecnomical to run in term of GPH.
4)Diesel has so much more torque. No business of slowing down when you hit a heavier load like gas engines do.
5)Fuel is cheaper. Red died diesel does not have road tax on it. So it's 10% less expensive than gas.
6)Engine life is about 5 times as long as a gas engine. Gas explodes diesel does not.7)Reliability of a Diesel engine is far greater than a gas engine. No spark plugs, no ignition. Just air and fuel.
8) Less maintenance, less parts to worry about.
Now the cons: not too many
1) Heavier than gas engines.
2) Bigger than gas engiones
3) More expensive than gas engines. But not much considering the advantages
4) A little noisy compared to gas.
5) Old Diesels smoke a litle when started up cold.
6) Some Diesels smell of high sulfer fuel(like suet)only the older ones that do not have the EPA improvements on them. Most Bertram 31 owners have opted for Diesel propulsion for the reliability and range.
Hope this helps. Dave K
