Diesel vs. Gas HP

It seems the same boat requires 50% more HP when powered by gas.
Is this because a diesel engine's torque allows it to spin a much larger prop at slower RPMs while achieving similar results?
Conversely, a gas engine has to spin a smaller prop faster to achieve the same speed(?).
Diesels' size and weight are limiting factor as well I suppose, allowing gassers to achieve more HP and speed while filling up the same engine room.
Your thoughts on the subject would be welcome!
