Of course, the 6BT's in my boat are damn old pickup truck engines, but the same stuff applies. I get blueish smoke when cold cranking, goes away when they warm up just a bit. When I first come up after having idled at the dock for some period, I get gray smoke until on plane - no smoke at all the rest of the day, under any conditions. For awhile, I had black soot and a fuel sheen on the starboard side, was told it might be an injector sticking after idling too much, or something like that. I changed injectors on that side over the winter for diffwerent reasons, and that condition has gone away. The only time I've had black smoke from these engines was when I found a turbo inlet hose loose. Even the new common rail Cummins in my truck kicks out some black smoke when I punch it. The dealer said it may be the quality of the fuel lately, lot of this going around.
