"Reading" diesel exhaust

Cummins B-210’s in a B28, aprox 1400 hours each.
Port – Upon starting a small amount of black soot is deposited into the water. A small amount of white smoke is barely visible. There is a small oil/fuel sheen in the exhaust.
Starboard – Again and initial discharge of black soot and a light sheen on the water. White smoke is heavier and more obvious.
The starboard engine seems louder but I suspect that its because the engine cover comes into contact w/ the coolant reservoir. Neither is over heating, oil pressure is consistent, smoke is not evident at idle or cruising speed. Upon slowing and docking some smoke becomes more apparent and a bit of fuel smell.
Normal operation? Cause for concern or alarm?
