First Blue Marlin

There's been alot of bad news lately, and to much of the "reality" of life, so I thought I'd post this.

We went out on my friend's boat (31 Tiara) out of Indian River last Saturday to about the 30 line out from the Hot Dog. Got the spread in, get a white in and miss it. About 9 am we see this huge fish hit a green machine off the port short rigger--its a blue (our first--we're all pretty new to this).

After about 1/2 hour, we get it to within 20' of the boat, and the fish decides it wants nothing to do with us--off it goes. About 10 minutes later, we get it to the port side of the boat--got the leader--and it again decides to run. In a few seconds, its greyhounding (now I can use that term from experience) across the water maybe 200 yards behind us. Looks like the Penn 50 w/80 lb. test might get spooled--getting really close--Greg (angler) goes past strike to full to try to stop the fish--line making that "tink...tink" sound.

Fish stops, drag back to strike, and between the boat and reel, we start gaining line back. Another 10 minutes or so, we get the fish up to the boat--its tired--we hold the leader, take a few pics., and its time to cut the fish loose--no need to revive, its swimming with us but under control. Cut the line and off goes....

Fish was about 10 1/2'-11' long--we guessed about 450 lbs--girth was huge.

Like I said, we're pretty new to this--got the first white and now blue on the boat this year...my friend's preparation for every trip is absolutely meticulous, and it works...

What a day--thought I'd share. Now when I hear these great stories from the faithful, I'll understand the thrill alot better. Paul posted over on Tidalfish with a pic. of the fish under Blue Marlin.

For 5 of the 6 guys on the boat it was the first blue...the other guy (my other neighbor and friend) has been offshore I think at most 5 times, and it was his second. His first trip ever he got a blue that the Cap. estimated at 600 lbs.--and I've seen the video. We were calling him the "wiley veteran"...
