return lines fittings

i am going to use my old fuel tank (gas)for my new install(diesel),what is the proper way to install the return fuel line fittings in the tank???what is the proper fittings(brass)?i was thinking building up a spot with like 6 layers of 1708 bi/axcel and then drilling and tapping it for a fitting.doest his sound right ?if not any input ?????thanks
