I think what's happening is that the stations are just flat running out of gas. The whole region is supplyed by a single pipe line from the Gulf and, of course, nothing is flowing through it at the moment.

09/01/05"Governor Urges Gas Conservation
(RALEIGH) -- Governor Mike Easley is asking everyone in North Carolina to conserve their use of gasoline because the supply line has been cut off by Hurricane Katrina.
The only supply line for gasoline coming into North Carolina is a pipeline coming from the Gulf Coast. The power to pump fuel through that pipeline was shut down by the storm Sunday and it could be the weekend before the electricity is back on at the pumping stations.
Governor Easley says travel plans should be delayed and non-essential travel is suspended for government employees. 'We're going to ask all North Carolinians to conserve gas, some stations are already out of gas, they're more likely going to be you off-name brands,' says the Governor.
It could be days or weeks before the supply becomes critically short in North Carolina. He says they are working with the federal government on a national strategy to address the problem."
