Hurricane Katrina left little standing in the coastal communities of Venice and Boothville in Plaquemines Parish.
To the west, Grand Isle was less devastated, but a dislocated section of the La. 1 bridge to the island blocked access to it.The hurricane’s 40-mile-wide eye skirted the tiny towns of Venice and Boothville as it made landfill Monday in the marshes between Grand Isle and Empire.
The result was total devastation for the communities near the mouth of Mississippi River.
Homes and businesses that were left standing Tuesday had water up to the rooftops. The area's orange groves were submerged in water and debris. A steel building turned into a gnarled pile of scrap.
The storm tossed boats onto land and shredded homes into splinters. Gas or oil spills gave the river a rainbow hue. Much of what was once land is now water.
Plaquemines Parish President Benny Rousselle warned residents to not attempt to return to their homes. All the parish's roads are closed and impassable.
The only sign of life Tuesday was cattle grazing along the parish's main road, La. 23.
At Grand Isle, the scene wasn't quite as stark.
Beach houses collapsed, docks were washed away, telephone poles toppled and roofs peeled away. But small swaths were left untouched.
Katrina shifted a section of the bridge between Grand Isle and Port Fourchon. However, many of the oil rigs close to shore appeared to have survived the storm.
