Not meaning to step on toes, if struts are configured with a large enough wall to accept the next size up bearing sure it can be done. We have bored and machined over a thousand struts in the past few years, stock struts for boat builders, aftermarket struts and modifications to existing struts.
Last year when I changed my trannies from 1:1 to 1:1.56 I wanted to with larger shafting, kind of get ready for the diesel repower down the road. However, the strut tube OD is only 1-7/8" OD at best, couldn't even put a 1-3/8" shaft in, never mind go with 1-1/2" shafts.
It is that reason I assumed (my fault) when he said his machine shop couldn't do the re-bore job, it was because he had similiarly designed struts. Not enough material.
