Generator panic

Power went out about 6 am this morning and from the looks of things, may be out for days. I cranked the 21 KW and plugged in my fancy BK VOM that also reads the frequency. 121.6 volts and a stead 60 cycles, so away we went. About 8 am noticed the voltage was rising, first to 124, then to 130, then to almost 150, so shut the genset down, figuring maybe the electronic voltage regulator was overheating. But the lights in the house were not unusually bright. Then I started wondering if maybe the VOM was off, so tested a 9v battery and it showed 12 volts. Hummmmm - when was the last time you changed the 9v battery in the VOM, UV? Duhhhhh, maybe never. Soooooo - new battery and back to 121.6. Dumbass, but sure glad an apparent big problem turned out to be not one.
Sounds like things in New Orleans are grim. Water from the lake has apparently topped the levee on the Industiral Canal right where AJ is. . . .
