Russ,
Do you have a fuel cooling loop or a return off your fuel injection system that goes back to the tank? Here is why I ask. On some Merc's (I have been told) there is a fuel loop that takes the excess gas, cools it with a small 2" x 5" heat exchanger and allows it to return to the high pressure side. The high pressure side gets warm, but because it's under pressure, it wont vapor lock. The excess side is low pressure and will vapor lock, not a problem if it is cooled, or just dumped back into the tank. This may be the first exchanger in your cooling system. If your oysters have set up in there, I would expect other cooling issues as well.
I could be way off, but EFI and vapor or air don't mix. I only mention this because it sounds like you said when the engine gets cool, it fires back up. I don't think this explains any loss of RPM's though.
