The surface drives only get efficient at very high speeds, much higher than the B31 hull can acheive. Normal surface drive speeds are in excess of 50 kts. It appears that they have come and gone as they don't really work in the real world vs. racing applications. Now on the other hand, water jets do work, but again at high speeds. Me & the Bride were sitting at a sushi bar in SF last week in the old ferry terminal and saw a huge cat ferry leave the dock headed for Marin County, and it blew a lot of water around, but when it got lined up and hit the gas, that sucker was doing about 50 kts in a cloud of spray. It went out of sight before I could finish eating my cut bait.
