Shelf or Battery box?

Battery box vs. shelf,
I see on the Zero C y'all have constructed a full length shelf outside the engines? Do you think that is more useful in the long run? I think I will be putting a genset in eventually, and have to replace the battery boxes now as there are rotten, what are your thoughts? Thanks, Rob
