Walter,

I fly 737's for a living. A 737-900 burns 5000 lbs of fuel per hour averaging 500 kts. (a gallon of jet fuel weighs 6.7 lbs) That's .67 mpg or 3537 feet per gallon. (I worked out the figures for a 46 bertram and with turbo Detroits it will get around .6 mpg) A 737-900 seats 167==so 167 X .67 = 112 people mpg. Lets compare that to a car with 4 people in it getting 25 mpg. 4 X 25 + 100 people mpg. We all know for the most part nobody drives with 4 people in a car==our planes average around 80% load factor. If you work the figures for 1 or 2 people to a car and an aircraft with 80% load factor, you will see that an aircraft is much easier on the fuel than using a fleet of cars to transport the same # of people across the country. How many of us (myself included) are driving around alone in our trucks or SUV's that get 12 to 14 MPG? I think if you had the actual fuel burn figures for a 747-400 carrying up to 500 people to places you could not drive if you wanted to, you would be surprised at the figures.
