My Hurth 630a's have always made a "raddling" noise when in gear at idle speed. I talked to the ZF distributer in New Orleans and they said it was normal, but they did not recommend allowing them to "raddle" for extended periods of time. Mine get quiet at 1000 rpm so I bump up the throttles as soon as I can. If in a long no wake zone, I take one out of gear to keep the speed down. (Easier to do now that I have Capt. Pat's oversized rudders). My trannies are going on 2000 hours with zero issues so far. (knock on wood) I believe there was some discussion a while back on Boatdiesel.com about this topic. You might do a search over there.
