chrysler 318 bent valve/pushrod

Here we go again! I have heard different opinions as to what may cause a bent valve and pushrod. Theory 1....stuck lifter causing valve to remain partially open as the piston comes up and forcefully closes it, resulting in bent valve and rod. Theory 2... A lean condition in that cylinder overheats the guide and valve stem causing it to stay open. Anyways when it happened I lost rpm but boat still ran...just rough idle and no compression in cylinder number 1. Pulled the head and found bent exhaust valve and bent pushrod. Needless to say since the motor has a late 70,s casting number I spent the money on lifters to narrow that one down. I have not reasembled yet because I am waiting for a valve. Parts are hard to get here in the keys. Any opinions on cure for this would be appreciated. I have several mechanic friends and no one seems to have the same answer. Thanks in advance, Kevin
