I don't know what the engine manufacturer's will think...
but how about the boat designers that will have the flexibility to the put the engines anywhere they want.
Of course these electric motors aren't as small as they lead you to believe in this article. The generator on the engine won't be no light weight either.
The automotive industry has been researching these types of hybrid technologies for decades, and some how I don't see the recreational marine manufacturers taking a giant leap ahead with propulsion technology.
They aren't exactly a driving force in power technology, in fact I've never seen a boat builder that did anything more proactive then just bolting someone elses power train into or onto their hull.
By the time they make a change we'll probably have Solid State Membrane Hydrogen Fuel cells moving our cars around.
Although, some of the barriers to solid state Hydrogen Fuel Cell power in the automotive are not as problematic in the marine industry. Things such as Hydrogen Distibution, and High Pressure gas storage are much easier to overcome with marine applications.
I guess it's quite possible boats will change faster then we think.
So, now it's not the cost that's holding me back from repowering with new diesels... I'm actually just waiting for other technologies to become available. Yeah... thats right :)
