Al - congrats on becoming a Steward of the Best Boat Ever Built. Diesel fuel is nasty (and now expensive) stuff, especially in the warm months when bacteria grows in the interface between the water in the bottom of the tank and the fuel. Best precaution is to keep the tank full at all times to keep the condensation from putting more water in the tank, but you can't get it all out. Sooooo - filters and water separators are the solution, and drain the filters as often as you can, and change the primary filters a lot. On my Cummins 6BTA 250's, I have Racor 500's at 30 micron and the spin on secondaries on the engines at 10 micron. Sure, I could use 2 microns on the spin ons, but you gotta keep the engines running. I also have the Algae X magnetic fuel condtioners, and yes, they do work to break down the clumped up oxidized fuel molecules. The less you run the boat, the more you need to change the filters. Clean fuel is the lifeblood of a diesel. Fooling with the filters is the tradeoff you pay for the economy and reliability. Just get used to changing the filters a lot, draining the water separators every time you use the boat, and you will be a Happy Steward.
