Home AC tip

Was at a house today that a customer keeps his boat at.
Older widow lady owns the house and was talking to the owner of the boat about having to replace the house ac because of poor cooling. Her ac tech said the unit was shot.
I've been to the house before and noticed the overgrowth around the condensing unit, especially over the fan and suggested that might be the problem.
The boat customer offered to trim the vegitation around the unit while I worked on his boat.
After I was done, she came out to say the house was already cooler and the ac unit had shut off on the thermostat.I told her that the unit needs unrestricted air flow around the sides and and at the top. If there is any vegitation blowing when the unit is one, then air flow is being restricted which in turn causes the high side temp to increase which decreases cooling capacity, makes the unit run longer, uses more juice and shortens the compressor life.
The same thing can happen if you keep dogs in the yard. The condensing unit can suck up dog hair and block the flow across the coils which you may not see due to the cover.
Clear back vegitation around the condensor and clean the coils once a year. Or have your service tech do it.
If you live near the salt air, the aluminum fins can corrode and block the air flow.
That foamy stuff, corrosion block is good for coating the fins.
