VPenta KAMD 43P's

I need some advice on a set of Volvo Penta KAMD 43P's. I have a set with ~ 600 hours on them. I have no evidence that the valve clearances have ever been checked/reset. The owners manual calls for a reset every 200 hours. This seems a bit excessive to me, but I'm on my first set of diesels and not very knowledgable in this area. Any advice, recommendations???? How hard is it to do by oneself? I was quoted by a Volvo mechanic that is would be a 3 to 4 hour job per engine. That's an all day job! Trying to make sure I'm not ging to throw money into the wind.

I read John's post and discussion on 41's. I'm getting a solid 20 kts on my 31 Bahia Mar with a large tuna tower at 2900 RPMs. Wide open at 3900 I get 26 kts. I'm satisfied with the fuel consupeion. Last 150 mi round trip fishing at the Norfolk Canyon was 99.9 gallons. Not bad in my opinion.
Thanks, Stan
